Micro-business protections
Ofgem defines a micro-business as one using less than 100,000 kWh of electricity or 293,000 kWh of gas a year, or employing fewer than ten people with turnover under two million euros. If you qualify, you have additional protections: suppliers must give you clear contract information, must not tie you to automatic rollovers of more than twelve months, and must include your contract end date on your bills.
Common traps
The three we see most often are: signing a renewal letter without checking the market, letting a contract lapse into out-of-contract rates, and agreeing terms over the phone with a cold caller who never explained the length of the commitment. All three are avoidable.
How long it takes
For a single-site small business with one gas and one electricity meter, the whole process is usually a two-minute enquiry, a short call to confirm details, and a contract emailed for signature. You do not need to change anything physically in your premises.

Am I classed as a micro-business?
If you use under 100,000 kWh of electricity or 293,000 kWh of gas a year, or have fewer than ten employees and turnover below two million euros, you almost certainly are. We check this as part of your enquiry.
I work from home — can you help?
Only if the supply is a commercial one on a business meter. Domestic household energy is outside what we do.
Do I pay VAT at 20% on business energy?
Usually yes, but businesses using very low volumes, and certain charities and not-for-profits, may qualify for the reduced 5% rate. Your supplier will need a VAT declaration form from you.
