Business gas
Business gas comparison for UK companies
Business gas is a smaller market than electricity, with fewer suppliers actively quoting — which makes comparison more valuable, not less. Rates move daily with the wholesale market, and the gap between a renewal letter and a properly negotiated contract is often substantial.
Business gas in detail
Understanding your business gas bill
Gas is metered in cubic metres or hundreds of cubic feet, then converted to kilowatt hours using a calorific value shown on your bill. You pay a unit rate per kWh plus a daily standing charge. Larger consumers may also see transportation and metering charges listed separately.
Your MPRN — Meter Point Reference Number — identifies the supply point. It is a number of up to ten digits printed on your bill and is what suppliers use to price you accurately.
Small usage, large usage, and why it matters
Suppliers band business gas customers by annual consumption. Below roughly 73,200 kWh a year you are treated as a smaller commercial user with simpler pricing. Above that, more suppliers will bid and terms become more negotiable. We quote the right panel of suppliers for your band rather than sending every enquiry to the same three names.
Getting your gas and electricity aligned
If your gas and electricity contracts end on different dates, you spend the year managing two renewals instead of one. Where it makes commercial sense, we can align the end dates so future renewals are a single conversation. We will only recommend this if the numbers support it — aligning dates is not worth paying a premium for.
What you get
- Quotes from suppliers actively pricing your consumption band
- Correct MPRN and meter details taken from your bill, not guessed
- Fixed-term contracts from one to five years compared side by side
- Option to align gas and electricity renewal dates
- Free to you — supplier pays our commission, disclosed before you sign
Business gas: your questions
How do I find my MPRN?
It is printed on your gas bill, usually near the top, labelled MPRN or Meter Point Reference Number. If you cannot find it, send us a copy of the bill and we will locate it.
Is business gas cheaper than domestic gas?
Unit rates are often lower because business supply is not covered by the domestic price cap and is priced closer to wholesale, but business contracts carry VAT at the standard rate unless you qualify for the reduced rate, and there is no cooling-off period. The two are not directly comparable.
Can I get a business gas quote without a bill?
Yes. We can quote from your business name, address and estimated annual usage, then confirm exact pricing once we have the meter details.
