Green business energy tariffs
Renewable business electricity is a genuine product, but the label 'green' covers a wide range of substance. We explain what is actually being certified so you can make a claim about your energy that stands up to scrutiny.
Green business energy in detail
What REGO-backed means
A Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin certificate is issued for each megawatt hour of renewable electricity generated in the UK. When a supplier sells a green tariff, it retires certificates matching your consumption. The electrons in your building come from the same national grid as everyone else's — what changes is the accounting.
That accounting matters. It is what allows you to report your electricity as zero-carbon at the point of use under standard greenhouse gas reporting, and it directs demand toward renewable generation.
Green gas
Green gas tariffs are typically backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin certificates or by carbon offsetting. The volume of genuinely biomethane-sourced gas in the UK is small, so these products are usually partially certified. We will tell you the percentage rather than letting a marketing name imply more.
Does green cost more?
Often the difference is small, and on some supplier panels a renewable tariff prices level with the standard equivalent. We show both so you can see the actual premium, if any, rather than assuming one exists.
What you get
- REGO-backed renewable electricity from UK suppliers
- Certification percentage stated clearly, not implied
- Standard and renewable tariffs priced side by side
- Documentation you can use in your own carbon reporting
- No supplier favouritism — we do not push a preferred green brand
Green business energy: your questions
Is a green tariff really renewable?
The electricity supplied to your building is grid electricity. A REGO-backed tariff means your supplier has retired renewable generation certificates equal to your consumption, which is the recognised UK mechanism for claiming renewable supply.
Can I use a green tariff in my carbon reporting?
Yes. REGO-backed supply is what underpins a market-based zero-carbon electricity figure in standard reporting frameworks. Your supplier will provide the documentation annually.
Do all suppliers offer green business tariffs?
Most now do, but availability varies by usage band and contract length. We check which of them will actually price your supply.
